Wheeling Community Information

The history of the Wheeling area dates back centuries to when the Potawatomi tribe settled along what is now known as the Des Plains River. The earliest mention of a white settler is of one ?Mr. Sweet? who entered the area in 1833. The area grew quickly after this, with lodgings and a brewery all built by the middle of the 19th century. The city of Wheeling itself was incorporated in 1894 and has stood proudly for more than a hundred years. Though this is only a taste of the history of the area, the Wheeling Historical Society - proprietors of the Wheeling Museum ? have archived the city?s past in good detail.

The city of Wheeling offers its residents a wide range of fun and activity, whether through the parks and recreation system, arts and cultural attractions or special events.
